19_8 Grand

Herman Hediger arrived in Neillsville in 1923. Throughout his life, he produced cheese and dairy products. Herman wished to bring a little of Switzerland to Neillsville. After a study of Swiss building styles and methods, he drew up the plans for a "heimat-style" home. He brought a carpenter and a mason from Switzerland to help build the house. The roof was fashioned with clay tiles imported from Switzerland and fastened with copper nails. The stone for the porch pillar and the arch above the front door were brought from Hatfield, Wisconsin. The interior has a circular poured concrete staircase. EL
